Y2K?— Prepare Today!

One of Jesus' simplest lessons goes right over our heads.  It's a lesson the victims of hurricane Mitch are finding hard to learn, for they are streaming north in droves to enter the United States, because all that they possessed is "gone with the wind." No insurance policy is going to save us when those "four winds" of tornado force begin to rip away all that we think we own. Honduras and Mitch and Somalia and Kosovo are all reminders that we are also vulnerable.
What Jesus tries to teach us in Matthew 6:25-34 is this: don't allow yourself to be preoccupied with what you eat or drink or sports or clothes. Watch the birds; you have a heavenly Father who cares for them. Won't He care for you too? You can't even make yourself taller by a foot; what good does materialistic worry do you? Look at the spring flowers; even Solomon couldn't dress like that! So don't worship the malls or the car dealers' showrooms, or all the things that define your personal prestige. "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness."
Why "seek"? Is God trying to hide Himself and His salvation? Must you find what you want in some mountain hideaway or guru's seminar? The word translated "seek" in Hebrew (Jesus probably said this in Aramaic) often means "pay attention to," "give thought to," or "inquire of." It's not God hiding from you; it's God trying to get your attention. If a future "Mitch" of some sort  blows away all your possessions, you won't need to despair. You will have learned a kinship with the One     who said, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head (Matthew 8:20), who at the same time could say, "I have come that [you and I] might have life, and . . . more abundantly" (John 10:10).
You want something impervious to thieves, moth and rust, earthquake, fire, flood, wind (Matthew 6:19-21)—an assurance that your heavenly Father not only loves you but respects you as well; that He knows you are genuine in your choosing security in Him over everything else. Then, whatever happens you will be like Jesus on His cross—secure in Him, eternity in your grasp. A good choice!
